Last night I decided to stream a little Louis Lortie Chopin (Volumes 4 and 3 in HD on Chandos) and was amazed to find I could only listen to 30 second snippits (I had previously marked them as favorites and listened to them)! This turned out not to be an accident. All of my other Chandos favorites only played snippits. Furthermore, if I used the normal search process, they didn't appear in the results. Today I accessed ClassicsOnlineHD via my PC, and when selecting these favorites the phrase "Only available for download at this time" appeared on the web page.
So I contacted Support and shortly received this reply:
"It is much to our regret that some recordings under Chandos and BIS labels are only available for Download (with 30-second previews only) due to the recent change on our licensing agreement with these labels. This is the reason why you cannot listen the entirety of the album.
Please do not hesitate to contact us again if you have any further concerns.
Thank you!
Warm Regards,
Customer Service
ClassicsOnline HD*LL"
I did a little searching of both labels after this and discovered that most Chandos albums are four years or older. BIS seems to still have some recent stuff, but a couple of my favorites are marked as above.
I'm wondering if part of this is related to the upcoming Classical Shop changes (it is run by Chandos) where it has been announced that many labels previously sold as downloads will no longer be available.
I did a little more digging on other sites like Spotify and Tidal, and new BIS and Chandos seem to be missing. Maybe they are going to strike out on their own streaming-wise, or like Hyperion, just not make their releases available for streaming.
Of course, the big downside is that my "library" of favorites is not concrete or consistent and can change at the whims of the providers and labels. Something I've always known but didn't want to acknowledge.
