Spending time today with the 1960 Met cast of Moffo, Tucker and Merrill; RCA LSC-6154.
I was about 12 when they came to town for their annual Summer pilgrimage to the provinces and this was my first opera, a big deal in my family. My mother had gone to New York when she was about 20 in that eras version if American Idol and auditioned for the Met in front of Rudolph Bing. He famously (in our family) told her she had a lovely voice and "go home and make babies".
In later years my father would refer to the fact that at this performance, with the two Jewish Boys from Brooklyn singing the leads, nearly every woman up in the cheap seats with us was wearing a Hadassah Tallis ;)
I love hearing the delicacy of Moffo in the upper register although in the opening scene aria after the Italian National Anthem a little more power would have been good. Merrill stands out as one of the better Baritones of the recorded era but Tucker was born way to soon, before Auto-tune.
Layton and Mohr really have the Rome Opera House sonics dialed in with the cast moving believably about the stage and the orchestra where it belongs. My White Dog is a very, very good pressing.
Intermissions over.
