Just heard this morning, pretty shocking alright. I hadn't seen him in several years, but knew Lew for around 40 years. He played the shit outta the lead book in one of my big bands in the mid-late '70's. Crazy SOB would sometimes bring 15-20 mouthpieces, switch 'em in mid-chart and might end up playing 5 m'pieces during one chart - especially if he also had a solo.
Played with him quite a bit over the years in a number of other bands. Amazing player, both as a lead player and soloist (his small group with Lou Marini and Jeff Beck was excellent). There'll be a helluva lot of Soloff stories told around town. As you probably know, Lew was a unique character as well as a unique player :-)
