It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

RE: Database entries for classical music

I do not think that there is a univeral answer as it is going to depend upon what fields are provided in the particular software used and the user's preference when searching.

So no answer really to your question as what you can or cannot do to improve things. Sooloos would not seem to be that similar to what I can do using DBpoweramp and JRiver MC.

I usually do have to amend what is suggested by the 4 database searches that DBpoweramp/PerfectTunes provides but normally all of the basic stuff for classical music is fine at track level, down to overall tempo markings at movement level (e.g. 1st Movement; Allegro,Andante, Presto etc.). Indeed it is often too detailed giving alternative instrument combinations that the composer approved of but which do not relate to the recording in hand. However if there are various composers involved on the album then it is necessary to add the individual names at track level to aid searching.

Artist is usually a problem as the composer is often substituted ( I suspect as work arounds for i-tunes etc.) and requires amendment. For my needs the pre-set genre is often too specific e.g "Choral" when just "Classical" will do as I don't want dozens of sub-genres. I can search by album title, artist ( requires discipline at track level if several are involved), genre, composer or free form.

So I conclude that even if what I use is imperfect, Sooloos may be worse from what you say. Not a good advertisement for the Roon spin -off.

BTW, if you sold your CDs etc. I hope that you retained the booklets as you will still need them if you want more detailed information e.g orchestra/group members, recording location, producer/engineer etc. etc. as there is no place for such information in any software that I have seen.

Overall classical music for PC/Mac audio is both a minority interest and complex. I do not expect any easy answer due to developer's financial constraints.

NB: apologies but I have not dealt with physical items as I do not use a database to record them and find that my filing system used for 50 years is adequate (classical by composer A-Z plus collections A-Z, Jazz A-Z by artist, Rock A-Z by artist etc.).
