Seems like a lot of baggage to carry to opera, given the blood and thunder that operates there.
Having been a cast member and an audience member in Rosenkavalier, I find it to be charming and funny and moving with gorgeous music. I think the 1st act is the most difficult to get through, lots of text, but there are some delightful vignettes like the tenor aria.
My favorite excerpt recording is on London with Regine Crespin (what a glorious and sensual sound!), Hilde Guden (soaring top notes) and Elizabeth Soderstrom (has sung all three leads during her great career). The conductor is Silvio Varviso, a very underrated conductor who spent some years at the Met. This was never a complete recording to my knowledge.
Complete versions that I like are Bernstein with Christa Ludwig and Walter Berry, married at the time, and, Solti with Crespin again.
Never have fallen for the echt Viennese Karajan performance. Oh, well.
Maybe an excerpt album would be a good place for you to start.
Best of luck.
