In Reply to: I like Boulez' '70s Parsifal. Should I be ashamed? Should I feel short-changed? posted by jdaniel@jps.net on August 25, 2015 at 08:00:45:
Or no. While I am a bit of a Parsifal maven (avoid Gergiev at all costs - he doesn't have a clue), there are a few I haven't heard, including both Boulez and Karajan. I also want to hear the 64 (I think) Kna Parsifal with Vickers in the role. I have two other Kna's, I have Kubelik, Solti, Barenboim, Janowski (his is better than Gergiev - he does have a clue, but still falls short), and likely others I don't recall at the moment. Also, I have the excepts made by Muck in the late 20s - a must have for Wagnerites, and I have heard the Levine. Last, I have seen Parsifal live twice.
I think that either Parsifal grabs you or doesn't. The Boulez was an award winning recording when released, but has a reputation for being swift and also deconstructing Wagner's music. Again, I don't have an opinion since I haven't heard it, but of all of the Parsifals I own the two I would keep if forced to reduce would be the 62 Kna and the Kubelik recording, which is only on CD, I believe.

- But...but: the Boulez is a great deal, the entire opera fits on 3 lps, beating out Solti, who gets the music - jdaniel@jps.net 22:10:04 08/25/15 (0)
