. . . especially the works from the classical period (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven). I don't remember the Schubert too well, but I like the Brahms concertos with Fleisher too, even though they aren't my absolute favorite performances.
In the Schumann symphonies, I just can't abide Szell's schoolmarmish changes to the orchestration (even though they're not nearly as extensive as Mahler's!).
The problem I have with many of the Szell recordings is the engineering, once he switched from Epic to CBS. I know I seem to be out in left field on this, but that Wagner disc features some of the worst multi-microphoning I've ever heard on disc. SO inferior to other roughly contemporaneous accounts such as Leinsdorf/LAPO and Steinberg/Pittsburgh.
I loved your comment, "I am not that big of a fan of the Szell Des Knaben Wunderhorn - I think the singing is over inflected." Gosh - do you think? ;-)
