The first giveaway is the pic on the back booklet cover with the guy holding the double bass (nyuk, nyuk). The second is the sound of the ensemble itself - you can clearly hear the underpinning by the bass. It's quite nice actually and I prefer it to two cellos competing with each other for king of the lows. The booklet notes that substituting a bass for one of the cellos was a common practice in the early 19th century. In any case this is pleasant music, well played and recorded. I look forward to my next listen in about 10 years (God willing). And what about the other 6 string quintets, the string quartets and the 4 symphonies...
