I think Mike Sachs did a great job of getting through it with atrocious accompiament. He had to play loud to set time and pitch center. On trumpet it could be the kiss of death trying to match a nebulous pitch center. He is a top orchestral player and would love to hear him play it whith his orchestra. A good concerto should allow for nuance and sophistication of phrasing as well as virtuosity. That is impossible without an equally musical orchestra, much less one just trying to get through it on wind instruments. 4 tubas! Wow.
