Ollie & Jerry: "Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us"

Some of you are well aware that, individually/privately/off-line, audiophiles come to me for pop music suggestions. And when it comes to music for parties, going "Freestyle" is a safe bet. The audiophiles tell me that Ollie & Jerry's "Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us" is not only a hit at their parties, but is also very enjoyable in its own right, when we do our audiophile thing. That's fine and dandy, but let me give you some background information.

Ollie Brown was a prolific session drummer. Jerry Knight was a founding member of Raydio. They then formed the duo, Ollie & Jerry, and went to work on the soundtrack to the movie, Breakin'. This included the infectious, "Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us."

In the summer of '84, I took Marine Biology at Honolulu's Punahou School. Yes, that is the same Punahou, which is Barack Obama's alma mater. My lab partners were Ryan and Ted. One of 'em had a Walkman. C'mon; it was the 80s. There were an unprecedented depth and variety of popular music. But for me, Ryan, and Ted, "Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us" was our anthem. Could we breakdance? Nope. Could we do any dance? Nope. The three of us just stood with our arms around each other, and just jammed to "Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us."

The girl (Taira?) next to us just rolled her eyes at us dorks.

But hey! That merely prepared me for becoming an audiophile, where we are used to and subject to ridicule, put-downs, denigration, and personal attacks. Why be embarrassed? We should be happy with and about the music we like and enjoy.

I see that "Breakin'... There's No Stopping Us" is once again popular, and making the rounds. With elementary school kids, it has found a new audience. But I have to admit. When it comes to dance moves, these elementary school kids are light years ahead of me, Ryan, and Ted. Whether or not you can dance, enjoy!
