I think any orchestra would love this kind of rehearsal. He knows what he wants, and gets it across. He is both focused and consistent. The measure-by-measure work is what's needed with a piece like this, which is not obvious at all (ref their first run-through.) The acid test is whether he got what he wanted in the rehearsal time allowed. I suspect he did.
Yes, it picky, but a good performance requires it. Even with something as "lowly" as a pop song, getting it just right takes lots of time and work. We recently did a day recording pop songs from the 60's with great musicians, and we got five songs recorded in ten hours, which is almost a record.
Music isn't easy.
