You'll also notice that some of the serious jazz listeners here, including some professional jazz performers, are less than enthusiastic about Wynton Marsalis. One some level this attitude is understandable. Marsalis and Lang Lang are superstar media celebrities, for more than purely artistic reasons. And there is a lot more to jazz than Marsalis, and a lot more to classical piano performance than Lang Lang.
But these stars play an important role, much as Van Cliburn did. They keep a patina of glamour and pizazz on the art that helps keep it in the public eye. And that matters.
