Thanks for posting this, some old friends and acquaintances there. Marcus is great here, and this is one of the best performances I think I've ever heard from Lawrence...what a great writer. Marion is a very fine bassist, her name is shown on screen for a moment. Rick Roe is a solid pianist, I think I only played with him once, on a big band gig. I got to know Vincent York via a few theater gigs shortly before I left for Chicago. I haven't seen most of these folks for many years now.
What can you say about Marcus? Just an amazing talent, great performer, and an impressive mind. He never forgets a name--ever. I ran into him in Chicago about a year after I moved there. I'm not sure he even knew I had moved there, we never really knew each other very well at all. He was walking toward the Green Mill with a couple friends, still at least a hundred feet away in the dark, and before I even get a good look at him, he shouts ahead "Hey, how you doing Duane?" I couldn't believe it. Uncanny.
Marcus is extremely personable and, unfortunately, notoriously unreliable. His penchant for not showing up for stuff is probably the main reason he's not an international star. I hate to say that, but everyone knows it's true. I don't think he has any kind of drug problem or anything like that. It always seemed to most guys I knew to be more of an ego/personality thing, which is odd when you see how attentive and pleasant he is to be around. An enigma.
