I quite agree. There are a lot of times where I put a piece of music on, and take it off within 2 or 3 minutes thinking, that's not right. And regarding warhorses, its still a modd thing - sometimes its boring and sometimes it fits like an old comfortable jacket.
New music is harder since I am in an exploring mood when I buy it, but then not when it comes time to listen.
I have always felt the same way about auditioning gear too, when I am in the mood to head off to a shop, I'm in a good adventurous mood and things sound great. Usually I put off purchases til I've thought about it, then the mood wears off.
