Great birthday present. I am a native Washingtonian who still lives in the metro area. I learned to play trumpet and read music in the D.C. school system. I got a great musical foundation, and as a young adult I realized I was a better listener than performer. The early exposure to a formalized music program has provide me a lifetime of joy and discovery.
I am so glad that your family was able to give a gift that will benefit future musicians. With the trend to withdraw funding from arts and and physical education; it seems persons, such as yourself, are providing a life line. Regretfully, in a microwave culture that has devolved to me, me, me, now, now, now - it seems the future for the arts is destined to the largess of private benefactors (ala 18th and 19th Century Europe). I applaud your desire to conduct and to contribute to the DCYO.
If you opt to conduct, again, I would like to attend the performance. Please let me know, when/if there is an encore. I won't ask you to buy me lunch ;-) As a thought, it could be an Audio Asylum performance fundraiser and the proceeds could go to the DCYO.
Thank you for sharing, and belated happy birthday, maestro.
