Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

RE: Argerich, Schiff, Uchida, Brendel, Perahia, Ax, Pletnev, Thibaudet, Ashkenazy, Pollini… why haven't the past

Perhaps one needs a certain historical distance before one can make assessments and start to use "golden age" labels. In addition, many of the names on your list (Uchida, Schiff, Brendel, Perahia, Ax. . . ) play in a kind of "don't rock the boat - music is a holy art!" manner - nothing wrong with that (and those folks you named do this approach well), but we might have a different impression if you had included such additional names as Pogorelich and Sokolov on your list too. To be sure, Argerich and Pletnev are more "out there" in their playing, but the latter, aside from his extra-musical difficulties, is sometimes artistically irresponsible IMHO - as in his set of Beethoven Concertos.

Finally, I basically disagree with you that the list of previous generation names you cited is any more "golden age" than any other pianistic generation, previous or subsequent. Even though a couple of critics might claim otherwise (but I notice you didn't cite any however), I've got a very jaundiced view of most critics anyway.
