First, what a wonderful, intriguing, and at times playful piece of writing. Second, we heard this live around 1985 by the Cleveland Orchestra Dohnanyi conducting and I recall being totally blown away. The horn section in the first movement played under the stage in Severance Hall in the first movement then quietly and gracefully arrived on stage. My wife went to get an lp of the symphony and the record store person recommended the Solti lp that I'm listening to tonite... an amazing transition through music 30 years into the past. I love music!!! And Mahler is awesome.
