Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

That's good!

There is never anything wrong with discovering music and musicians we enjoy listening to. Tastes vary. Conformity is not a requirement for any music lover.

Personally, I cannot stand to watch people emoting on stage. Male, female, any race, nationality or religious preference -- I just find it totally off-putting. My concert nightmare is sitting in an audience for a performance of Beethoven's Triple Concerto featuring Lang Lang, Alisa Weilerstein, Joshua Bell, and Antonio Pappano, all squirming, swaying, rolling, emitting and emoting. I've had the misfortune of sitting through performances by all of these musicians independently. Thankfully never together.

Now -- that's different from objective assessment of their playing. I've never found Alisa Weilerstein's concerto performances to be especially riveting. She's always seemed under-powered and a little stiff in concert. She's a little better in chamber music -- as long as I'm not forced to watch her. I had occasion to see her playing quartets at Spoleto one year and her squirminess had infected two others in the group. It was horrid to watch. I had to sit with my eyes closed throughout. But the music itself was pretty good. And I've heard recordings by Bell and Pappano that I thought were pretty good.

My personal experience with Lang Lang was a performance of Beethoven's First Piano Concerto, which he absolutely butchered. So I'm glad your experience was better.
