it's hardly universal among music critics that the guy's awful or that he's a Chinese version of Liberace.
Is it his amazing popularity? That should be welcomed: it can only serve as a vehicle to widen the audience and its music appreciation for the classical canon.
Is it his race? To some, all Asian performers sound alike (is that itself an unconscious echo of the racist, "They all look alike?").
Mutability of opinion: happens to me all the time both with composers and musicians. Didn't "get" Schumann piano music, at all, for several years. Then, something "clicked." Same with many, many other composers and styles of music (early polyphonic chorale music).
