After hearing this trumpeter's name quite a bit, but only having heard him on Vijay Iyer's "In What Language?", I came across Akinmusire's latest album for Blue Note, "The Imagined Savior is Far Easier to Paint" at Barnes and Noble today. His playing is startling at times in its fleetness--he can play the horn like crazy. Stylistically the music is similar, to my ears, to that of Vijay Iyer, Jason Moran, and others. As a trumpeter, he reminds me most of Marcus Belgrave and Brad Goode--the latter being even less well known than the former. He has Marcus' dark, cornet-like tone; skillful coloration effects, and the ability to play high relatively quietly--a rare skill among trumpeters. He often spits out jagged, angular lines with large leaps between low and high registers which sound an awful lot like Goode to those who have heard him. Some of the music is written for string quartet with guest vocalists--there is plenty of genre-bending going on here.
We'll see how it wears for me in the long term, but my first impressions are very favorable. Anyone else listening to this one?
