Ormandy, very late in his career, recorded it for EMI. Sadly, there's very little of the conductor's work that remains in my collection, so I'm glad to have this prized reminder. At one time, I bought lp's just because his name graced the cover.
No one gets the low bass drum, gong and trombone farts which precede the "Chase" like Ormandy and the EMI team.
There's no doubt about it, Ormandy's on fire here, as are his Philadelphians. I've never found a more vivid and/or colorful performance. Surprising though. In retrospect, my trusted, name-brand conductor of the 60's/70's IMHO turned out to be a pretty tepid interpreter of most war-horses.
