I've always had a pretty good opinion of Gatti. I thought he did a good job with the RPO. His Mahler and Tchaikovsky recordings with that band were solid, although I wouldn't put them among the best out there. I think his Respighi Roman Trilogy was quite good; the remastered CD is worth shelf space.
My only concern about Gatti as the music director of RCO is that I'm not sure he can really maintain the RCO tradition of playing the Dutch national and regional composers. To my knowledge, he has no real familiarity with that music. Mariss Jansons carried on that tradition splendidly.
Gatti has very big shoes to fill. The RCO has had so many outstanding music directors and has remained one of the best orchestras in the world for a very long time. The trust put in Gatti suggests that they have confidence in his vision, leadership, and talent.
