This was the era before digital recording became predominantly corrupted..... (It wasn't just analog masters.... Many "DDD" recordings were good too.) Around 2000, we started seeing 96 and 192 kHz masters for CD, and the intermingling of asynchronous formats. Things went downhill after that, and we haven't recovered since then.

See above. This is my take on it. Others might have different takes.
