I saw him twice at two Detriot Jazz Festivals in the last 10 years....once with Kenny Burrell...it's was night, 70-ish degrees, and outside in the starlit night. It was just breathtaking....
...I have his last few recordings (everything on Mack Avenue).....his last CD "Legacy" was done with his son (Anthony Wilson, guitarist for Diana Krall) and Anthony's son. In the notes, it states Gearld's eyes were getting so back he called out the notes vocally to his kids and they wrote things down CORRECTLY THE FIRST TIME!!
One good thing...he had an active life.....back when I saw him with Kenny Burrell; he told us he just turned 90...and still blew us away!
He will be missed !!
