Not surprising. When the modern flute was invented in 1847, only one of its many innovations (and not the most important one) was that it was made of metal. Wood versions were also made almost from the very beginning. It then took about 70 years, i.e., well into the 20th century, for the metal version to become the international standard. The wood version never disappeared entirely, especially from the UK, Germany and Eastern Europe. And as I mentioned, it has even made a comeback.
