Brahms One, Cleveland Orchestra/Franz Welser Most .... [yt]

A long time coming, but finally a full live performance by the Cleveland Orchestra w Franz W. Most..... From a BBC Proms broadcast.

The read by Most was rushed and "glossed over".... Kind of reminds me of Carlos Kleiber doing Beethoven.... But it never works with Brahms.... The one thing I noticed in this performance that I noticed in Most's studio Beethoven Nine- A total disregard for melodic line. Each player seemed to be playing with his/her own dynamic quirks. The performance also lacked drama.... The orchestra otherwise sounded decent, overall. But nobody will mistake this for former MD Christoph von Dohnanyi's performances (with Cleveland and NDR, the latter back on YouTube), which were some of the best Brahms Ones I've experienced.

The only other interesting thing was flutist Joshua Smith now using the same wood instrument that NHK's Hiroaki Kanda uses.... But I guess it's the player, not the instrument, responsible for how it sounds.
