Yes - 1968 - what a year! I used to have that Kegel recording on LP too, and I agree that Kegel was an excellent conductor. For some reason, I never reacquired it once CD's came out. (I have a distant memory of Hanne-Lore Kuhse's singing not being the most ingratiating, but this could be a false geezerhood recollection!)
I currently have recordings of the C-major Mass by Giulini and C. Davis. I expected to like the Giulini better, not least because of Elly Ameling singing the soprano part. But darn if she isn't bettered by Christine Eda-Pierre (from Martinique) in the Davis recording (at least IMHO)! Eda-Pierre is also excellent in Davis' recording of Berlioz' "Benvenuto Cellini". Somehow, I would have expected she would be much more extensively represented on recordings than she actually is.
It looks as if there are a number of more recent recordings of this Mass (possibly excellent) which I haven't heard.
