Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Streaming has changed the market

As a former musician/songwriter, I have never been fond of the music business. I wrote music, I played music, because that is what I loved doing.

As I look at the way the music business has evolved, it is much different now than it was back in the day. What I see now is a focus, not on the artists, but on music as a commodity.

For the record labels and streaming services, music is no longer a lot of individual products, like aisles of stuff in a Walmart. For them, music has been commoditized. It is sold in volume, like crates of widgets. And as a result, pricing is negotiated between the streaming service and the label by the crate-full.

Doing it this way, both the streaming service and the record label make a profit. For them, it is a viable business model.

As for artists, they are each just a little cottage-industry producing audio widgets. If their widgets are distinctive and catch the interest of a lot of listeners, they might become popular and generate some name recognition and brand loyalty.

The distinctive product line that artists create serves as a marketing tool. The artists don't make their money selling lots of widgets. They make they money doing performances, or getting their product picked up by an advertising agency for other products, or landing in a film, or whatever.

The most successful performing artists become the best seller line of audio widget producers. The label can separate out their product line for higher pricing, and can compensate the artist more for the popular widgets. And of course, the marketing via the streaming service further increases the revenues received for performances and other artist activities.

Is this really a reasonable metaphor? I don't know. It works for me. But the reason I quit playing/writing music and established a different career is because I hated the business of music. I would hate it even more now.
