Shadows and Light for the first time in years. Joni Mitchell with electric jazz guys of the time: Pat Metheny (g) and his keyboard player Lyle Mays with the Weather Report rhythm section Jaco Patorius (b) and Don Alias (perc) and Michael Brecker on sax. Throw in The Persuasions on backing vocals. It's a nice recording and a great performance. I'm not a Joni fan really except for the jazzier albums in this period. Great tunes like Coyote and Amelia are quite moving for me and I'm someone that really doesn't care much for vocals and when I do they are seldom in English, the only language I understand well.
When hearing that wonderful and unique Jaco tone the first time a smile came over my face. When it came to his solo (only on the DVD,not the album) tears came to my eyes briefly. They were equally if not more so for the tragic side of his short life.
A Jaco story told to me by a friend that knew him was from the mid 80's. They were in NYC. Jaco, bipolar, probably, no definitely not taking his meds and overdoing it with other things went to the store on a cold and snowy winter night. He came back without shoes saying he gave them to someone on the streets with no shoes. A unique soul.
So get the DVD and enjoy it. I think it will appeal to many who like different types of music. It also has other interesting footage edited in and not jut the live concert video. A+
