His early death was a real tragedy - a very talented performer who made a lot of good records. His recordings of Brahms' Double Concerto and Beethoven's Triple Concerto are the tops for each work, IMO. His Fidelio is excellent, right up there with the Klemperer, although the gimmicky production (actors do the spoken dialog rather than the singers) hurts - some might like it, but the difference in the voices is jarring, IMO. Still worthy of being heard, and well-cast. His Bartok is also excellent, and his Dvorak 9th symphony requires a hearing. I like his Beethoven 9th as well, but I am not fond of the Eroica that was part of the Great Conductors of the Century series. I'm still investigating his legacy - on my list are his Mozart opera recordings, for example.
Except for the GCOTHC release, all of my Fricsay is on vinyl. The recording of the Double Concerto has to be heard - don't know how the CD is, but on vinyl it is a spectacular recording. I had to get two copies - the first (the release that also has the Maazel Tragic Overture) was visually perfect but full of noise, while the second is an original 10" LP. Both sound the same, actually, but the 10" had pristine surfaces.
