Nations used to rely on the arts to express "identity". Having a national identity used to be one of the goals that civilized countries lusted after to one degree or another. But, "industrial/commercial identity" has eclipsed national identity so thoroughly that we habitually confuse the former with the latter. When we raise those flags up to show our patriotism we are saluting our economic power, little else.Football games are considered indispensable while "the peaceful arts" are not because football is (effectively) a branch of the military. Football is designed to keep our young cadets on their toes. Football is a game created to remind our young men that, should the "other side" appear to threaten or hinder us in any way, we must be fit and ready enough to tear their heads off without question.
Musical education won't be thriving anytime soon while football will continue to thrive. Without games like football we would have no way to "express ourselves" - and that would be unthinkable, wouldn't it?
