I think listening takes some experience ( at listening ). As a musician, I listen to lots of music I've never heard before, so "Memorized" doesn't come into play.
It's great to hear something I like for the first time, but I didn't like everything the first time, it can take familiarity to "get it " many times.
I am sometimes amused or annoyed at some Inmates reaction to a Classical piece, that the Tempo or Interpretation isn't what they think it should be. Of course , they certainly have the Score to refer to, in order to properly glean the Composer's intentions.
I listen to pieces, composers, orchestras, Not Conductors. For me, there is never " One Way" to play anything.
Of course I am glad that there are so many that Do listen!
