I take issue with saying that they have declined.

This spring I got to hear Boston, Philly, the Met Orchestra, SF, New York, Cleveland all at Carnegie Hall in about a 2 month period. Cleveland came out as the best sounding orchestra. Their virtuosity, intonation, power and clean phrasing were unsurpassed. After hearing them play you knew you heard something special.

While the Orchestra's sound may lack the rustic European texture it had under Szell, they remain second to none.

For whatever reason, the recordings with FWM have been a bit lackluster.
