Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Mostly Agree With Poles

Sibelius: as you know, his symphonies differ from each other, so that a one conductor approach doesn't seem to work as well as it might with other composers. I agree with Poles that the Rozdv set's very good [I've got it], although I fing the playing of that era of the soviet orchestra [70s and 80s, I think] to be rough compared to western ones.

That said, I'd say that Rohzd's close to top choice IMO for the 1st and the 3rd. Unsentimental and direct. The music's rich enough to support many points of view, so I've come to appreciate the almost diametrically different Davis/LSO live performances as well.

For the 4th, I really like Ansermet's recording. It's the darkest one I've heard. Also, he used tubular bells in the finale, which I really prefer [I realize some people really don't like that; I think Chris is strongly opposed to bells here].

For the 6th at the moment I'm enjoying Davis/LSO live. I also like Karajan on EMI [haven't heard the DG version].

For 2, 5, and 7 - so many great [and different from each other] performances, so little time.

For an overall set, with mostly only mild short comings, I find Gibson's early 80s, early digital Chandos set to be quite good. It's a neglected and forgotten set, but it's good.

I also agree with Poles about Golovanov. I haven't heard him doing the Rach 2nd, although I'm going to seek it out. But, what I've heard of his proves that he was a true romantic conductor. He really made music come alive. The sound on the things I've heard [Liszt and Tchaik] was poor.
