There is nothing sublime or subtle in Tchaikovsky's symphonies, and I am thoroughly bored with them. I have been listening to Brahms for 40 years and it still thrills me to the core and warms my heart. His symphonies are, by turns, full of powerful fury and conflict, then soothing and tender. Their expression is complex yet not cerebral, eliciting the full range of basic emotions in response. I cannot imagine not regularly enjoying Brahms, but I could easily live the rest of my life without hearing more Tchaikovsky.
The opening of the German Requiem makes me ponder my own mortality, and the passing of others, in a way that no other music ever does, yet the conclusion of the Second Symphony makes me want to live forever and love everyone all the while.
Peace,
Tom E
