But Tchaikovsky didn't understand Brahms. Great melodist though he was, he had no understanding of musical structure, so I suppose that shouldn't be a surprise. He didn't recognize the greatness in Bach, either.
As to tricks and technique, of what else does music consist? The simplest melody is based upon these as surely as the most complicated fugue. It is a puzzle of symmetries broken and repaired.
