RE: Brahms was fighting bombasticism at times

I'm not in general a fan of romantic-era bombast, but I find the Brahms symphonies moving and profound.

It wasn't like that at the beginning, I just heard the bombast. But while in some of the other romantics there is nothing under the bombast, there's great profundity in Brahms, both structural and emotional -- and moments of tenderness as well, surprising perhaps in such a gruff man.
