RE: Has anyone else come late to Brahms?

Some Brahms recommendations from a professional orchestral musician:

for the symphonies, Szell's recordings with Cleveland are still pretty much the definitive performances.

for the piano concertos, try Brendel with Abbado conducting the Berlin Phil. These may only be on CD.

For the Requiem, Gardiner's recording is very hard to beat.

For the horn trio, in addition to the Bloom try Dennis Brain's recording. There is also a fascinating recording out there of a guy named Vogelgesang who plays ALL THREE PARTS!!
