I have this theory that if the music is too difficult for me then either the performer(s) or composer is(are) at fault. What is that quote about the heart responding? It is in one of my previous posts. When your heart responds, you will be aware of it.
That said, different moods and wishes play a role in what I want to listen to. If I'm in lowered feelings or pensive, my choices in music will be those that console those feelings. I mean no Jimi Hendrix or Janis Joplin at those times. Certain music can be understood as cries of pain.
