Very interesting thread. Just off of the top of my head, as a youngster I might have noted that Brahms tried too hard. I think that was my general take on his music that I knew back then.
The quote about his being a jazz musician today seems somewhat apt. He knew a lot about music and had great facility but the magic of his melodic gift seems a bit stilted compared to, perhaps, Schumann. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart. J. Strauss Jr.? No contest.
Not to say that he did not have worthy compositions. I looked up his Brahm's Lullaby and it was op. 49, so I question my earlier statement. BTW, I just today heard Nat King Cole doing it in English. Quite nice.
Nowadays with youtube, I'll be able to sample some others of his later works. I see that he wrote a ton of songs. I cannot remember one time that I've ever heard any of them.
