I don't pretend to have the world's best golden ears. But the so-called "golden age" recordings of the late 50s to early 60s have some obvious shortcomings IMO, no matter how well-made they were in many cases (I've read that Ansermet cared very much about the then-new stereo technology and getting the best possible sound, so it's no accident he achieved 'audiophile' results). Notably, these old recordings usually have limited dynamic and frequency ranges and a high noise floor compared to what was possible by the 70s, never mind today.
However, that doesn't mean we shouldn't have them at their best, and it's great news that the Decca Legends are now available in a true 24/96 format. I have my favorites from that era such as Regine Crespin's Les nuits d'ete with Ansermet, the Reiner Verdi Requiem with Price and Bjorling, the Curzon Mozart piano concertos, etc., so I'll look for those, and I won't worry if they match up to the latest audiophile recordings.
