"As for their vinyl, it wasn't top-shelf, but it was no worse than the full-priced Angels. People who were really finicky about sound used to spend a fortune on pressings from EMI's European arms."
Yes, I went that route once. The Seraphim pressings of the Kempe-Dresden Strauss orchestral works, were pretty bad. They might play half-way decently once but would quickly deteriorate. The Kempe performances were top notch, considered the best, and still considered by many as the best, and here they were only available on third rate vinyl. In those days there was an outfit called German News that imported German EMI records and they had available a box set of the complete Kempe-Dresden recordings on ten or twelve Lps. I bought it, paying a pretty penny for those days, but these were first class pressings that played beautifully. About ten years later EMI issued those recordings on CD for the first time in three separate box sets, but the CDs were a far cry from the German Lps as far a sonics are concerned and a huge disappointment for that reason.
