I can definitely understand the sense of sadness in these things. I've bought used records and CDs that were signed by the artist to a person, with a small note of some sort, and I wonder why the person got rid of it.
One particular record comes to mind: I bought a classical piece and inside there was this sweet note from a mother to her daughter, thanking her for the visit and telling her that she couldn't afford much but that she knew the daughter really liked the record and wanted her to have it.
I didn't personally care much for the record, but the simple fact that it "did" mean something quite special to someone at some point made it difficult for me to get rid of. I've still got it.
It's weird how sentimental I get sometimes. And I'm a guy! Damn!!!
