It's worth remembering that Phil Collins was an extremely good fusion-style drummer. His sound was the least attractive part of his playing--that late-70s/early-80s single-headed cardboardy sound that everyone seemed to want in those days. Since that sound began to become popular long before his arrival on the scene and because everyone seemed to want it, I vote coincidence. Don't know for sure, but I've never seen that anywhere and I read a lot about drums/drummers.
