This's really fun stuff to me (not a drummer, but a professional guitarist for a couple of decades). This is [one of] the process[es] that is at the heart of so much wonderful music. Back in the '70s and '80s, I lived in Los Angeles. One of my best friends was a great keyboardist and writer. He was the first one to tell me about the Top Forty (Thirty? Twenty?) Songwriter's "creed" — "Write last week's Number 1 song and f*@& with it so much that nobody can recognize it."
