... about the idea that Bo "invented" that rhythm. Like most other things in music, it existed in many places for a long time before it was supposedly invented, including the infamous 'shave and haircut' bit you mention.
This is not to take anything away from Bo, who along with Little Richard was among the first r'n'r guys to realize the value of the Monster Riff. The 'Bo Diddley rhythm' may have existed prior to his use of it, but Bo made it more prominent, more pounding, in fact the main feature of his songs. And his use of distortion and reverb was pretty groundbreaking too. What can ya say? A lot of those early records really rock.
But I would add that I would draw the line when people start comparing him to Elvis or Chuck Berry, who to me represent an achievement above and beyond that of the other '50s rock innovators.
