A wonderful, brilliant man and an interesting composer. They were family friends and neighbors, and his wife was my first music and piano (and French) teacher. He spent much of his professional life in the U.S., coming from Switzerland before W.W. II.
Unfortunately, they returned to Switzerland when I was still very young, and he retired from his position at Brooklyn College.
As for his piano recordings, I've only heard his Beethoven op. 101. Very striking and individual performance. Maybe a bit uneven, but I suspect not recorded under optimal circumstances. (In New York in the early 50s, I think.) At least in the U.S., he was primarily known as a composer and an academic, not as a touring and recording pianist.
I think recordings of at least some of his own compositions are still in print. I'll bet his piano recordings are interesting, but as you say, not very well recorded.
