I heard Ashkenazy's Shostakovich preludes, which were o.k., then bought the Hyperion recordings of Tatiana Nikolayeva. All of a sudden, it all fell into place - and others say these were the least authoritative of her recordings of this material.
On the other hand, when chasing recordings of Liszt, I ended up with Frederick Marvin and Giuseppe Andoloro, whose versions of the Grosses Konzertsolo are both, well, pedestrian.
I'm intrigued by the fragments of Ernst Levy I've heard on that well-known e-retailer's site, especially by his Liszt Sonata: a piece of writing which is exceeding difficult to reduce to music, no matter how quick your hands. The little I heard suggested that Levy came at it from a truly different perspective from others, and it sounded like very good music indeed.
So, I'm tempted to shell out relatively big bucks for some not very well recorded source material from one who, I gather, was regarded as a bit of a curiosity in his lifetime.
Anyone here familiar with any of the Marston releases of his recordings care to commment?
