All the works I have tried by Brahms have very boring to my ears except for the Hungarian Dances as arranged for Orchestra. They are very uncharacteristic of Brahms and some say he stole them from his gypsy friend. I love Brahms Hungarian Dances for Orchestra a lot! By contrast the "other" dances written by Brahms do sound like Brahms!
Have you tried Messiaen's "Turangalila Symphonie for piano, ondes martinot and orchestra"? I find it very beautiful and approachable and yes it is a little weird, but I love it!
Music is love,
Mono is not music to my ears.
Give me stereo or give me silence!
