There's a saying about classical composers...

... that I think is both funny (a little) and true, and it goes like this: There are three composers whose works are above criticism--Bach, Beethoven, and whoever your personal favorite is.

JS Bach and Beethoven are, to my mind, head and shoulders above all others by virtually any measure. After that, it becomes more a matter of personal taste. If you like symphonies, the next in line might be Mahler. If you like opera, it would probably be Mozart. If you like piano music, maybe Chopin, and so on.

So... if I were asked to name the greatest composer, I would say it's a toss-up between Bach and Beethoven. If asked to name my personal favorite, the one whose music most appeals to me, it would be Beethoven or Mahler. I love their command of structure, their sense of drama, their innovation, and what their music "says". But I also love Stravinsky, Ives, Prokofiev, Haydn, and so many others...
